GREENVILLE, SC.

GREENVILLE, SC. - On Monday, the South Carolina High School League released its proposal for a five-classication format that, when approved, would go into effect for the 2016-2017 school year.

According to the proposal, Hillcrest and Mauldin would be reunited in Region 2-AAAAA. The Golden Strip rivals continue to play in all sports despite the fact that Hillcrest is currently in Region 1-AAAA and Mauldin is on 2-AAAA, but bringing them together again would obviously add meaning to their meetings.

Similarly, Carolina and Southside would once again be back together, in Region 2-AAA. For at least the coming season, Carolina will be in Class AA and Southside in AAA.

But realignment also works the other way. Rivals Berea and Travelers Rest have spent a number of years battling each other in the Peach Blossom AAA Region. The new format would place Travelers Rest in Region 2-AAAA and Berea in Region 2-AAA. The schools would find their way onto each other's schedules but for nonregion meetings.

Likewise, Daniel and Seneca would go their separate ways where region play is concerned, Daniel staying with current region foes Belton-Honea Path, Pickens and Wren (and adding Greenville) in AAAA, with Seneca joining Crescent, Pendleton, Walhalla and West-Oak in AAA.

The proposal will be finalized sometime after Sept. 17, when the Executive Committee of the High School League hears appeals from the schools.
